NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- January 4, 2010 marked the dismissal of Dr. Barry Friedberg from his voluntary association with the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Anesthesia Department.

Barry Friedberg, M.D. Champion of Anesthesia Patient Safety

Friedberg, a prominent, board certified anesthesiologist, offered to help with a long needed Level I study to validate the cost-effectiveness of his internationally recognized PK (propofolketamine) anesthesia. His recent dismissal leaves the future of this critically needed study in jeopardy.

"Hundreds of millions of dollars are wasted nationally every year for the lack of this study showing the effectiveness of 70 cents worth of drug given 3 minutes before the surgeon's incision," claims Friedberg.

"Giving 50 mg of ketamine in this fashion has reproducibly spared the need for most patient's treatment for post surgery pain and nausea and vomiting (PONV)."

California is facing unprecedented fiscal problems.

A Level I PK study could be a very inexpensive way to make a positive contribution to solving California's money woes.

By continuing to stymie a Level I PK study, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), through its affiliated university anesthesia departments, like UCI and UC San Francisco, appears to value the financial contributions from Big Pharma more than providing cost-effective care anesthesia services to patients.

"A Level I PK study could be a very inexpensive way to make a positive contribution to solving California's money woes, says Friedberg." Yet neither California taxpayer supported UCI or UCSF, both ASA affiliated institutions, have thus far been willing to perform this simple study."

Friedberg says he is trying to find a public interest law firm to provide pro bono services to sue these taxpayer supported institutions for failing to perform this study, and thereby, do something positive to reduce California's fiscal problems.

California public interest law firms are invited to contact Dr. Friedberg through Goldilocks Anesthesia Foundation.
